Rapha/One More City Century 2024 (0ctober 19)

For some reason Strava is not allowing us to add a link to registration. To register, for now, please google search "rapha one more city century 2024" and choose the UCSF Page. You can also paste this to your browser and it should work...www[dot]givingtogether[dot]ucsf[dot]edu/campaign/the-rapha-one-more-city-century-ride-2024/c574657 Rapha One More City Ride - San Francisco On October 19, 2024, The Rapha/One More City century begins at Rapha Clubhouse San Francisco in the Marina District. It starts by riding through The Presidio and over the Golden Gate Bridge. After passing through Sausalito, the ride connects to the Mill Valley Bike Path, climbs Camino Alto and continues through Larkspur, Corte Madera and Fairfax, before the first proper climb, White's Hill. After descending Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, the route turns rural, riding through Nicasio Valley and Hicks Valley. After turning left onto Marshall Petaluma road, enjoy the undulations before the biggest climb of the day, Marshall Wall. After descending the other side of the wall, you turn left onto Route 1 (be sure to fully stop at this intersection), with a long (paceworthy) road leading into Point Reyes Station. After enjoying a (self-provided) food stop at Point Reyes Station, you continue on Route 1 all the way back into Mill Valley, passing through Olema, Stinson and Muir Beach. When you arrive at Pelican inn, you attack your last big climb on Route One, then descend into at Tam Junction. At this point you are about 10 miles away. Keep it safe and continue back to Rapha Headquarters for dinner at Shake Shack (they are giving riders discounts). Then come to the clubhouse, grab a drink and share the stories with all your new friends. This self-supported ride is intended to be a ton of fun and to provide an opportunity to ride with old friends and new, including Christine O’Connell, founder of One More city, who is making the trip all the way from London to ride with us. The ride is also intended to be challenging so please come prepared and ride within your own abilities. We highly encourage you to reach out to ask any questions you may have. Here is the route: POST RIDE ACTIVITIES We closed the street down in front of Rapha so you can arrive safely and take your time. SF Bike coalition will be providing bike parking at the clubhouse from 4:00-7:00. Shake Shack, which is across from the clubhouse, has generously offered discounts on their food. Their entire patio will be available with heaters so you can relax while you eat. There will be beverages available at the clubhouse after the ride with entertainment and drawings for Rapha swag. ABOUT THE CAUSE The goal of the century is to raise $50,000 for metastatic breast cancer research and this year we have partnered with UCSF to be the beneficiary of the funds. If you have yet to create a rider page please do so here. Alternatively, please consider donating here. The funds we raise will directly support the work of Laura Esserman, MD, Andrei Goga, MD, PhD, and Laura J. van ’t Veer, PhD, whose research, including clinical trials at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, is leading to treatments that help metastatic breast cancer patients live longer while experiencing fewer side effects. One More City is an annual cycling campaign in October (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) with a simple ethos: the journey is never over; we are always progressing towards the next city, there are always more kilometres to do, more climbs to conquer and more challenges to face. This is akin to the reality of anyone living with cancer, especially secondary cancer, for whom the challenge is never over; there are always more treatments to endure, more scans to face, more side effects to campaign is focused on raising awareness of secondary breast cancer, and funding innovative research into this disease which killed nearly 12,000 women in 2016 in the UK alone. It was founded by Christine O’Connell, a keen cyclist who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer in 2018. For more about Christine, please see ‘About Us.’ We will be checking back from time to time so keep an eye out for future emails. Thanks so much and can’t wait to spend the day together! Therefore please download the route and be prepared to find your own way back if you happen to get dropped from the ride. This is the classic day out on the bike in the Bay Area. Point Reyes Station will be one of the major food and fueling stops on your Century ride so we thought we’d show you the spots to order your food and the location of facilities. Like last week you make your way out to Nicasio but this time you continue through to a junction, making a left onto Point Reyes - Petaluma Road. After a stunning descent, you make a right and continue onto Point Reyes - Petaluma Road. This road is very tricky so keep it single file and call out all road hazards. After about 4 miles you will hit route 1, make a left and descend into PRS. Rest up, grab a bite and refuel. You still have about 35 miles left on this ride so manage your strength and ride within your abilities. After riding on route 1 for a while you make a left at Olema and connect back onto Sir Francis Drake, riding past Pump (remember that spot) and back into Fairfax. Now you are done most of the climbing - chill out through the neighborhoods and save your energy for Camino Alto and Sausalito hill on the way back. YOU ARE DONE YOUR TRAINING! 8:00 start 8:30 roll Now, there are two weeks until the ride so be sure to keep those legs moving and even consider doing a -70 mile ride on October 5th before you start tapering the next week. The Saturday before (October 12th), consider riding 30-50 miles, and keep the legs moving throughout each week. Can’t wait to see you on the road! Welcome to the Rapha/One More City Training series. Each week we will increase our distance and intensity, helping to build up your strength with the ultimate goal of completing the challenging 100 miles on October 19th. Shoe/Pedal retention is required on all rides. Whereas we love our tri friends, there can be no tri bikes nor e-bikes.

Therefore please download the route and be prepared to find your own way back if you happen to get dropped from the ride. We are going to do the same distance as last week but with lots more climbing to get the legs used to working the smaller gears. We repeat our route all the way to Fairfax but turn at Coffee Roastery and start our climb out of Fairfax all the way up and over Pine Mountain, descending into the stunning roads of Alpine Dam. From here we have two challenging climbs (or one long climb depending on how you look at it), BUT, these roads are absolutely stunning. Look right on Seven Sisters and if Karl the Fog is kind you can see all the way down to Stinson Beach. From here the majority of your climbing is done. You descend all the way into Tam Junction and back onto the bike path to head home.

As you can see we have been working our way into Marin to get you familiar with the roads. This route takes us past Mill Vally, over Camino Alto and through Larkspur, Ross, San Anselmo and Fairfax. White’s hill will be one of the first challenges on your century and this climb will be done two times on this ride. After the first climb, we will continue onto Sir Francis Drake and out to Pump Espresso Bar for a well deserved break. After some food and fueling, we turn around and head back the way we came, all the way back into the city. Welcome to the Rapha/One More City Training series.
